One concert, six bands, young musicians from five East African countries – we invite you to experience the final outcome of a two year working phase within the East African Global Music Campus! On the 3rd of October 2018, a new generation of young musicians from Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Sierra Leone and South Sudan comes to the Goethe-Institut Addis Ababa, in order to perform a vibrant mix of their musical backgrounds in a celebration of the diversity of music on the continent. On top of that, you can look forward to the performance of the project’s faciliators: the well-known Zimbabwean singer Prudence Katomene, Girum Mezmur on the guitar, Abiy Woldemariam on the Piano, Will Ramsay on the saxophone as well as Martin Lillich on the bass and Dietrich Woehrlin on the drums.
The East African Global Music Campus (EAGMC) is a project which brought together 49 participants from Music Schools of Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Sierra Leone and South Sudan with experienced teachers from Africa and Europe, to take part in workshops twice a year. Every May in Kampala, administrative skills for managing music schools were imparted to 16 school administrators. Every September in Addis Ababa, 33 musical teachers focused on broadening their knowledge in disciplines like instrument training, harmony and melodic reading/writing. On top of that, the participants received an intensive training to facilitate a modern curriculum which was developed in and for East Africa. The project’s goal is to enable and encourage the participants to keep developing the curriculum as well as to adapt it to the the musical cultures in their country. On top of that, the project aims to create a network of music schools throughout the continent which simplifies co-operation and the exchange of experiences.
The project is conducted by the Global Music Academy Berlin in co-operation with the Goethe-Institut Addis Ababa, co-founded by Erasmus +, a program of the European Union.
